As is so often the case, I came across a link in a Tweet about a “must read” article in this weeks “Times Educational Supplement“.
I followed the lead and found this: “What is the purpose of education (in 500 words or fewer)?”
This article contains five contributions from teachers and educationalists to the global Purpos/ed online debate. They are very different and bring different perspectives about education to the table. One link that I did note was the desire for flexibility, the feelings that testing is not an end product of education and that any education worth doing is about learning to fail and learning from failure……. and learning to learn.
The actual Purpose/ed site states the following about itself:
We’re going to change the world.
Together, we’re going to spark a UK, and perhaps international, debate around the purpose of education.
- We’re going to speak
- We’re going to listen
- We’re going to write
- We’re going to debate
There are some pretty interesting people who have already got involved with this venture. Their first “event” will be on Saturday April 30th at Sheffield Hallam University.
